Mowing set to two very different seasons
Nothing about a Townsville lawn runs on a fixed four-week loop. Once the dry takes hold from April, a bahia lawn can go three or four weeks between visits without looking neglected — we simply raise the deck height and let the deep root system carry it through. The day the wet turns up around November, that same lawn wants a cut every week or fortnight, because tropical rain doesn't do gentle regrowth.
Soil plays its part too. The sandy ground through North Ward, Pallarenda and out at Bushland Beach dries out fast and needs a different watering-and-mowing rhythm to the heavier clay soils around Kirwan, Condon and the Upper Ross, which hold onto wet-season moisture — and the growth spurt that comes with it — far longer. Couch and zoysia lawns take a slightly different cut height again, so each visit gets set to the grass in front of us, not a rulebook.
